Halcon reopening update

I was just informed by the Municipality of Baco, Oriental Mindoro, that a Mt. Halcon climb was held on Sept. 4-7, 2008 to make an assessment about the mountain’ readiness for reopening. This would be the first sanctioned Halcon climb done in over three years. The lucky group of climbers were given permission by the town council for the said purpose, and the climb seemed to have been successful. They have yet to submit their report, however, to the municipality.

This development comes after we got a false alarm last March on a possible Halcon reopening. At that time, the Mangyan leaders objected. This latest climb may be an indication that the tribal leaders are now more amenable to allow climbers to their domain.

So, will Halcon be reopened anytime soon? Don’t count on it yet. There is a municipal ordinance in Baco that restricts climbing to the months of April and May.

There is a “very good chance”, however, that Halcon will be reopened by April 2009.

Magandang Araw po sa lahat.
CLARIFICATION lang po.

Yun pong nangyaring climb last summer sa Halcon (or Sialdang) ay hindi po initiated ng mga mountaineers na involve sa nasabing climb.
Ito po ay conducted and sanctioned by the Municipilaty of Baco together with Sangguniang Brgy of Lantuyang and the Samahan ng mga Alangang Mangyan sa Baco (SAABA).
